Happy Pride Month! This annual event is rooted in activism for rights, acceptance, and greater visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community. Most Pride events are held in June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion that began in New York City on June 28, 1969. Police raids on bars catering to LGBT patrons were common then, but that night the patrons of the Stonewall Inn, including transgender people of color Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, fought back. This moment in history inspired greater protection of LGBTQ rights and greater inclusion of the LGBTQ community in our society.
